Watters Gallery Concert 2017

Hammerings Records presents

A recital of virtuosic solos from Europe and Australia to be held at Watters Gallery, 109 Riley Street, East Sydney during an exhibition of paintings by Archibald prize winner, Euan Macleod.

Saturday September 16, 2017 at 5.30pm
Tickets $30/$20 at the door on the night.
Watters Gallery 109 Riley Street, East Sydney

Compositions by Iannis Xenakis, Vjekoslav Njezic and Alan Holley, with
Greg van der Struik – trombone
Ian Sykes – clarinet
Melissa Coleman – flute

I came across the mesmerising and beautiful music of Vjekoslav Njezic when I was in Croatia in 2016 and it is great to be able to have his early flute solo Monodie in the concert. Keren by Xenakis is considered one of the most virtuosic solos for trombone and Greg is an awesome interpreter of this mini masterpiece.

Our new CD with Paul Goodchild performing my trumpet concerto Doppler’s Web with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will be available for purchase ($25) at the concert.     Alan Holley

Australian composer Alan Holley

will have two new works premiered by Sirius Chamber Ensemble at the beautiful and historic Christ Church, cnr Lavender St and Walker St Lavender Bay on Friday, June 23 at 6pmOpal Wings II for clarinet, violin, cello and piano and a new song cycle setting the texts of the award winning Australian poet Mark Tredinnick. Alan loves setting Mark’s poems and says he finds the lyricism and rhythm in Mark’s poems to be music in its own way – ‘wordmusic’.

Martyn Hentschel, Alan Holley, Melissa Coleman, Ian Sykes

Also on the program is the Australian premiere of Frano Parac’s thrilling and colourful Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano. Parac is one of Croatia’s leading composers with a major European reputation. And to round out the concert, the perennial favourite, Chants d’Auvergne by Canteloube.
There is a great relationship now with Alan and Sirius Chamber Ensemble as they presented four works in a concert for his 60th birthday and have performed his trio Edward Harvey Portrait and his clarinet solo the birds will sing them off numerous times.

Performers: Taryn Srhoj (soprano), Ian Sykes (clarinet), Vanessa Tammetta (violin), Clare Kahn (cello), Claire Howard Race (piano).
